Nearly an hour later, Gilen reached the outskirts of Harrogate. Initially in a blazing fury at being dumped beside the road like so much refuse, after the leisure to consider the matter afforded him by the stroll back to town, he had ended up more amused than incensed.

Under a clear blue sky, the late-afternoon sun's warmth hinted at the spring that was soon to arrive, and the walk in the clear air was quite invigorating. Within a few more moments he would reach the environs of the park where he might come across a hackney to bear him the rest of the way home. He would be quite interested to discover, he thought with a chuckle, what the enterprising Miss Southford had done with his curricle and team.
